She was a Black female trailblazer, the fourth Black woman to serve in Congress. Collins was a champion for women’s rights, reproductive health, and the rights of Black people. Collins entered Congress following the tragic death of her husband, Congressman George Collins, and she ran for his vacant seat, keeping alive his legacy.
